Adding Rubrics

Rubrics can be used with answers to open questions, like essays, that are not auto-scored.

Rubrics can be used with answers to open questions, like essays, that are not auto-scored. Rubrics will be shown alongside the questions they're associate with when you're marking an exam. 

The Rubric Bank stores the Rubrics and Rationales for a Course so they can be re-used across Exams. Rubrics and Rationales can be added and modified by users with the appropriate permissions.

Like the Question Bank, you can create a Rubric within an Exam or in the Bank itself.

Add a Rubric to the Rubric Bank

1. Go to Courses and select the Course name from the list of Courses:

 

2. Select the Rubrics option from the left-hand navigation to go to the Rubric and Rationale Bank.

3. Existing Rubrics are listed below the search text box:

 

4. Select the button labeled "+" to add a new Rubric:

5. Provide a title for your Rubric and, with the Add New button you can select the Rubric type:

 

6. Select a Rubric type:

  • Choice matrix – a table of criteria with corresponding option columns
  • Rating – select a value from a range of pre-defined intervals
  • Free text field – a highlightable text passage that can be used across multiple items.

For this example, I'll choose "Choice matrix".

7. You can toggle between "Edit" and "Preview" views:

8. When you're happy, hit Save and then Back to return to the Rubric Bank:

 

Adding a Rubric

  1. Select an Exam from a Course's Exam Bank:

2. Add a Question from the Question Bank or Create a New Question in the Exam
Note: Rubrics can only be applied to non-auto-scored Questions like essays.

 

The Manage Rubrics button will appear in the Edit Question screen. Once you've clicked Manage Rubrics you'll be able to attach Rubrics to your question. You'll be able to create new Rubrics directly from this area as well.

Don't forget to save the Exam when you have finished.
